Winter Turf Protection: Preventing Frost Damage on Golf Greens

Introduction

Winter injury is rarely one event. It is the accumulation of small stresses across four or five months, punctuated by one or two hard resets that expose whatever weakness the turf carried into the season. A disciplined winter protection program does not eliminate risk — it makes the plant resilient enough to absorb what a winter throws at it and green up cleanly in spring.

This guide walks through the four winter injuries that most often show up in spring — desiccation, crown hydration injury, ice encasement, and snow mould — and how Evergreen covers reduce each.

Desiccation

Desiccation is dry winter kill: cold wind moving across an exposed, unfrozen crown pulls moisture faster than the plant can replace it. It is most common on exposed high points, ridges, and the windward edges of greens. The symptom is straw-coloured, brittle tissue in spring, often in a wind-driven pattern.

Covers reduce desiccation by breaking wind at the canopy and holding a slightly more humid microclimate directly over the crown. Because Evergreen covers are permeable, they do this without creating anaerobic conditions.

Crown hydration injury

Crown hydration injury happens when the crown takes up water during a mid-winter thaw and then refreezes hard overnight. Ice crystals form inside the cells and rupture them. Poa annua is especially vulnerable because it hydrates and de-hardens quickly.

The best defense is stability. A cover moderates the surface response to short warm spells, keeps direct precipitation off the crown, and reduces the amplitude of the thaw-refreeze cycle.

Ice damage

Prolonged ice encasement — generally more than 45 to 60 days on Poa greens — creates anaerobic conditions and can accumulate toxic gases at the crown. The result is dead patches in spring that look, misleadingly, like disease.

Snow mould

Both pink and grey snow mould thrive under prolonged snow cover on unfrozen or lightly frozen turf. A permeable Evergreen cover does not eliminate snow mould pressure, but it moderates canopy moisture and, combined with an appropriate late-fall fungicide program, meaningfully reduces the size and severity of scars in spring.

Freeze-thaw cycles

Freeze-thaw cycles are the connective tissue of every winter injury above. Each cycle:

  • Rehydrates and re-exposes the crown
  • Shifts soil moisture in the profile
  • Stresses the edges of the green first
  • Compounds mechanical damage from ice movement

Covering greens is, in large part, a strategy to reduce the number of freeze-thaw cycles the plant experiences at the crown.

How permeable covers reduce risk

A permeable Evergreen cover is not a tarp. It performs four jobs at once:

  1. Thermal moderation — smaller swings between day and night, and between thaws and freezes.
  2. Wind protection — reduces desiccation on exposed surfaces.
  3. Gas exchange — allows the crown to respire, preventing the anaerobic damage that plagues sealed covers.
  4. Moisture management — sheds bulk precipitation while allowing normal soil moisture movement.

The combined effect is a plant that experiences a milder, more stable winter than the one happening outside the cover.

Maintenance and monitoring tips

  • Install on dry, mown, disease-treated turf.
  • Anchor per manufacturer guidance; do not shortcut edge anchoring.
  • Keep soil temperature probes under and outside the cover.
  • Inspect after major wind or ice events.
  • Refit promptly after any planned mid-winter removal.
  • Store covers dry and clean at the end of the season to preserve warranty life.
